It's amazing to us how quickly 2014 has flown by. It was the year I moved back to Oregon, got back together with my boyfriend of six years, and decided to transform the Good Spell Book from a small time tumblr account to full blown website. Overall, it was a year for reestablishing myself. I was trying out new careers, new tactics in my love life, new friends, and while it had it's ups and downs I was able to preserver through the rougher patches. A great reason for this was being prepared for anything (or almost anything). I wasn't prepared for the stack of bills that somehow piled at my doorstep this year, but I was prepared for challenges. An annual yule reading is a great way to define how your year will look and chart the difficult months from the more successful ones.

If you are just beginning with tarot you can reference our previous posts on picking a deck and doing a simple celtic cross spread.

Our Good Spell Book Yule reading requires only a basic understanding of spreading cards and is fun for both novice or experienced tarot readers.

Start by preparing your deck as instructed in our celtic cross post. Shuffle your cards with your focus on the coming year. When you feel you have mixed your deck thoroughly and centered your thoughts on the new year, begin drawing your cards in the format below. Recall in our earlier posts that beginners should use only the major arcana of the deck. The major arcana will provide a simplified reading that it easier to interpret for new diviners. If you are familiar with the other cards in your deck, feel free to include these for a more in depth reading.

The first twelve cards you draw symbolize the twelve months of the new year. Each month is unique in showing the overall theme of your struggles, your victories, and your emotions.

At the bottom of this spread there are four additional cards. These cards are special in summarizing your actions in the new year.

The first card in this portion of the yule spread reflects your goals for the new year. Be sure to read any reversed cards with reversed meanings in order to get an accurate idea of what your year will be like. The second card is symbolic of your biggest struggle in the coming year, with the third card representing your biggest strength. The final card represents the outcome of the whole year. This card can be interpreted as where the reader is emotionally by the end of the year or as their biggest take away from the past twelve months, depending on the draw and the trajectory of the reading.

Remember that all tarot spreads are not concrete in their findings.

A yule spread is a great idea, especially for those with complex readings because it allows the reader to prepare for coming events and hardships and alter them accordingly. When I do love readings or financial readings this tool becomes particularly handy. Tarot spreads tend to have multiple outcomes- one outcome for one action, and another outcome for a conflicting action. Choosing the appropriate path is what effects the general result of the reading. Our personal yule reading showed many up's and down's. It is these spikes in negative energy that we can now control, or at the very least foresee. So spread your deck and find out what 2015 has in store for you; seize control over your new year and make it epic! For those with particularly bad yule readings, don't fret. This is an opportunity to shape your year for greatness.
