Chanel is the name of one of the most recognized couture labels in the world. Its history is rich, but we'd rather put focus on one of their more recent campaigns at this years Paris fashion week. It was another season of trends... Chanel was as anticipated as ever, with their penchant for wonderful set designs and the top models of the industry gracing their stage. This year it was a supermarket. Super markets, which used to be an epicenter for housewives in the 60's to flaunt their best day suits and tea length gowns now became the home to pink jogger sets and tweed coats. Chanel outdid themselves with every day products like bottled water and tomato paste emblazoned with the brands logo. Shopping bags bedazzled in their signature leather and gold chains were just another small detail that brought this fashionable supermarket to life. While this took place back in March, the hair designs enlisted by Sam McKnight still haunt our dreams. A mixture of vintage tweed fabrics, pearls, and crimped pony tails created a magical and put together look perfect for the holiday season.

Inspired by the wild hair styling seen at Chanel's F/W runway show, we decided to create own fabric accessories. It's both simple and fun to add a colorful and a textural element to your hair.

Supplies Needed

1 Sewing Needle

Thread

1 Clip (I used the kind you sew hair extensions to)

Scissors

Scrap fabric

Cut your fabric into long strips, as big or thin as you like. Tearing your fabric can have a very cool shredded effect, but make sure to cut a small incision into the top before tearing it so that your fabric rips in a straight line.

If you have any old clothing, bed sheets, or scrap fabric, this is a great way to repurpose them. Try to match the length of the strips you're cutting to the length of your hair. If you'd like them shorter or longer, varying the lengths can add dimension. It's really your personal preference! Cut up some lace or sequined trim… even shoe laces can work! Be creative and incorporate whatever pieces you like to make your hair clip one of a kind.

Once you have your fabric cut, lay them out so you get an idea of what they may look like in your hair. Begin to sew them onto your clip. If you don't know how to sew you can tie your strips onto a hair elastic. I do suggest learning basic sewing methods as it is a useful skill and fairly easy to pick up! Thread your needle, and start to sew them one by one in layers. Be sure to sew them onto the top of the clip so that it can still cling to your hair. Tie off the thread when you're done to finish off the design. These clips are easy to make and can be made in so many different color options.

There are many alternatives for styling your hair clip. Following suit with Chanel, you can place your clip at the top or the base of a pony tail, mixing in small braids and crimped pieces for added volume and texture. The ribbons themselves can be braided into your hair once it is clipped in, which makes these hair pieces a great addition to fish tail and classic braids. Another option is to clip the hair pieces into the top our your pony tail and twist it into a classic bun for a colorful twist, or place the clip underneath the top layers of messy, salt sprayed hair for a loose and layered look.
