Over the course of the next several weeks, The Good Spell Book is going to explore the basics of palm reading. Palmistry is the interpretation of the lines on our hands as a means of divining "the future" or characterizing the individual. Not unlike other forms of divination, palmistry has evolved over several centuries; varying from culture to culture. It is my personal opinion that divination in itself is unable to track the events of the future. Tarot and rune casting act more as a guide to our potential actions, while the power to alter these events lies in the subject. This is true of palmistry as well, which works better to define who we are individually rather than track our fate.

A common misconception about palm reading is the definitions of the principle lines (heart, life, and fate)- but much more goes into palmistry then these three lines, none of which act as an indication of who you will marry or when you will die.

In this series we will discuss the principle lines, hand color, hand shape, the left palm verses the right, texture, mounts, finger shapes, phalanges, and line patterns. Today we will discuss the significance of the right and left palm.

Though there are many ideas as to what palm you should read, we've found that the most common way to preform palmistry is to separate the hands into two categories: the major and the minor palm. The major palm for a right handed person would be their right hand, since it is the most dominate. Their left palm would be their minor. The major palm thus represents what a person has made of their life- who he or she is currently, while the minor palm represents their past and what has brought them to be.

Other cultures claim that you read the left hand of a woman and the right hand of a man, or more strictly, that the right hand represents the future and the left, the past. In any circumstance, you should choose the method which suits your reading style the best.

Next week we will delve further into the practice of chiromancy (palm reading) discussing the significance of hand shape, and what it reveals about your personality!
