This is the first in a series by The Good Spell Book on crystal magic. Each week we will cover a gemstone or crystal, it's therapeutic properties and how you can identify them. Today we are covering amethyst, that pretty purple crystal that jewelry designers are incorporating into all of their designs these days. Designers love this crystal for its range of purple hues; it's also incredibly easy to obtain, as it is deposited all across north Africa, Brazil, and the Ural Mountains of Russia.
This crystal is said to enhance creativity, intuition, and imagination- attributing to its highly useful meditative qualities. Now, this stone can range between a deep wine color with reddish hues all the way to the opposite end of the color spectrum, with some stones containing blue and bright purple hues. The bluer the stone, the higher concentration of manganese and iron. Maganese is the property which allows for it's carrier to maintain focus and inspiration, which is particularly beneficial to zodiac's Sagittarius and Capricorn. Green and red-brown amethyst are incredibly rare, but do occur on this stones color spectrum.
This rock is fairly hard, and can be placed on the brow and solar plexus to initiate its therapeutic relief (SEE: CHAKRAS). Hold the stone there for at least 20 minutes, and remember to regularly care for your crystals. Crystals are comprised of elements. I like to think of them as nature's energy sponge. Like people, they can be drained of their use and recharged of it. Amethyst is particularly good for relieving stress, sexual tensions, and neurosis. It's said that placing this crystal under your pillow can help relieve insomnia and stimulate pleasant dreams. Those with hot temperaments might also find relief in this stone, if properly meditated on.
